Walt Disney Imagineers worked hand in hand with locals to create Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa, which features 359 hotel rooms and 481 Disney Vacation Club Villas on a 21-acre beachfront development. From Hawaiian art to the landscaped grounds, the Resort is designed to celebrate Hawaiian culture and tradition.
KHS&S worked in a design-assist capacity on the project, from concept through rockwork panelization and installation. Utilizing a proprietary, lean manufacturing process, KHS&S developed digital files from original concept designs, which were digitally converted to individual structural rockwork panels or “chips” made of machine-bent wire. The panels were transported to the island in sea bins and stored in an off-site warehouse where KHS&S craftsmen applied lath and produced mockup frames for plaster and paint finish to be done on site. After installing the chips over a structural steel frame, the chips were stitched together and finished with handapplied plaster, which helped create the project’s multiple geological shapes including volcanic ash layering, limestone, coral, cut stone and basaltic rock.
KHS&S was selected to create the Resort’s six interior lobby water features, three water falls, a multilevel water wall, and seven exterior rockwork and water feature elements, including a volcano caldera, koi pond, lazy river, snorkel lagoon, turtle pool, fish habitat and basalt rock formation which lines the Resort’s beach access.
